About the Artist AASE MAY is a 1959 graduate of the Danish
National School of Art and Design in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has been a
finalist for the prestigious McKnight and Bush Foundation grants in Minnesota.
MAY'S paintings have an earnest, simple quality to them, an almost
self-effacing intimacy, often found in European Folk Art. Her subjects are
familiar and she persuades the viewer to spend time with that which
she finds beautiful in the world.
Beauty here is contingent on oddity, to a degree. There's a gently off-kilter
quality to the world we find ourselves in. Buds peek from enormous pots,
leaves are static as they fall down the canvas, flowers show their normally
hidden roots. This is by no means a generic beauty, or even a generic
sweetness. As earnest as AASE MAY might be, she is no naîf.
There's a canny
and a sensible application of mark and color and a subtle but keen expertise
with composition in her work. MAY'S work seems drenched in memory, and quietly exerts a fascinating sense of association with that which comforts us.
