About the Artist LISA BRESLOW attended the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1975 to 1976, and worked at the Art Students League in New York on a Merit Scholarship from 1974 to 1977. Along with awarded residencies, BRESLOW has twice received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, once in 1993 and again in 1998.
LISA BRESLOW'S paintings are abstracted and distilled, conveying an essence of nature rather than a literal description. As the Impressionists were among the first to isolate light, stripping down to an essential luminosity, BRESLOW'S layering of paint with rich, subtle color and tonal contrasts mirror the depth of their notion of not representing reality, but allowing refracted light to suggest the mood of a particular place. Therefore, the luminosity of BRESLOW'S landscapes and the lusciousness of her painting surfaces do not narrate the personal history of a particular place, but allow us to experience the beauty of a landscape found in the absence of literal depiction. This blurring expresses the quality of the air itself, and the way light moves through it.
The themes of simplicity in BRESLOW'S paintings transcend the chaotic sensory overload of our contemporary culture, and beckon the viewer to slow down and reconsider life in a tranquil space.
LISA BRESLOW also works in monotype. She appreciates how the two mediums (monotype and oil on panel) inform each other.
