About the Artist
MARC CIVITARESE places wax pigment into oil medium on linen and employs several layers of transparent glazes to achieve a rich translucency
that enables the viewer to see color through each other. The work evokes a spiritual response from many viewers, a response beyond the
appreciation of the perceived technical skill of the painter or the personal familiarity of the subject matter. CIVITARESE’S work reminds
one of a memory – a reflection of observations on nature – reduced, distilled, and refined. His work might be compared to clouds, since
a viewer can read almost anything into them. This doesn’t mean that they are not carefully composed, reaching for grandeur, but also intimacy.
Stylistically the paintings remind one of the atmospherically intense seascape paintings of JMW Turner, but they retain an impulsive, intuitive
abstraction. CIVITARESE abstracts the elements of shape, form and light, a distinct characteristic departing from a pure realistic depiction of
the world. The paintings also belong to a very strong tradition of 19th century Northern European Romanticism in which nature was seen as
corresponding to human emotional states. Though based on landscape traditions each painting is a solitary, personal and visceral exploration
of the relationship between man and nature.
CIVITARESE makes it clear that his inner life is very much a part of each painting. The “glory of the ordinary.”
MARC CIVITARESE received his MFA from Tufts University at the School of Museum of Fine Arts in 1997. He also attended the Massachusetts College of
Art and attained a BA in Psychology from Boston University in 1990.
