CROWELL was a resident artist at the Center for Art and Nature in the Catalan Mountains of Spain in September, 2001. In addition, she has been the recipient of a Travel Grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board.

REBECCA CROWELL'S paintings include abstracted references to the natural world and also, occasionally, to objects such as vessels and buildings. CROWELL investigates and examines these ideas from many angles. Each painting is an open-ended exploration, undertaken with a blend of spontaneity and critical evaluation. She employs landscape imagery in her paintings that is suggestive of trees, fields, water, earth and rock, but the spaces and subject matter remain fairly ambiguous, arising from the general character of natural elements colored by specific location.

CROWELL'S working method is also organic — the final image grows through layers of paint, subtle color shifts, and textures applied with brushes, rollers, rags and sticks. She builds up layers of paint, and scrapes, gouges and dissolves selected areas, enabling underlying layers to emerge. Most of CROWELL'S paintings are made of individually painted panels which are permanently mounted together in various configurations. The divisions between panels provide tension and structure to what is otherwise flowing, organic imagery.

Recently, CROWELL'S work has moved a bit along the continuum from abstraction to representation, while continuing to express ideas from various angles. Ambiguities are intentional, and subtleties reveal themselves with repeated viewings.
