Carol Flueckiger

About the Artist  CAROL FLUECKIGER received her M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1994 and a B.F.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1989. She also studied at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She currently is Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University where she teaches design, drawing and painting.

FLUECKIGER picks her subjects -- self-portraiture, laundry tags, weather forecasts -- from objects some may think of as uninspiring or commonplace, but there are several uncommon ways in which the artist explores her subjects.

Recently, FLUECKIGER began researching the ideas and writing of 19th century social activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She became fascinated by Stanton's ideas and pioneering vision. In her new body of work, FLUECKIGER used her own handwriting to copy a section of Stanton's 1892 speech "Solitude of Self" into a silhouette of her own body. "I wanted to try on Stanton's words like a pair of jeans," the artist states, "to see how early American social reform words fit my body." Her aim being to convey the act of reading history.

In another series, FLUECKIGER grappled with the ideas of time passing, past memory, and fleeting moments. Following the birth of her first child, FLUECKIGER turned toward the labels found in the clothing of her newborn son. As she folded laundry, she took note of clothing labels, watching portions of the world spin by in her weekly laundry.

FLUECKIGER'S painting surfaces recall traces of color and texture created by erosion from wind, rain and sunlight. Her layering and scraping process becomes a metaphor for geological forces acting upon the environment. Coating wood surfaces with layers of paint and then scraping them away, her panels are repeatedly painted, sanded, plastered and soaked in dye baths. Old layers of paint are continually recycled. The artist enjoys the paradox of creating subtle, delicate surfaces through aggressive methods of paint application.

How humans exist, dream and internalize their surroundings is being explored in FLUECKIGER'S work through images integrated with atmospheric backgrounds.
