Nathan Hilder

About the Artist  NATHAN HILDER was born and raised in Minneapolis. He creates paintings with deep, rich, sensuous color. Primarily a self-taught painter, he does not work from a model and all the subjects of his paintings are fictitious.

"When people ask me what this body of work is about, I tell them it is about geography. It is about the geography of a soul, the breadth and depth of the inner landscape." — Nathan Hilder

HILDER has made this foray into the inner landscape through a series of psychological portraits, setting about to chart the soul lines of his subjects, those crevices in one's being that are like riverbeds modeled by experience and emotion. In these paintings he portrays a beautiful sadness that becomes a peaceful place within the inner landscape.

A contemporary artist with a classical eye, HILDER work reflects an affinity for an artistic tradition that explores the resilience of the human persona. Artists in this tradition include Balthus, Schiele and Giacometti, along with the writers Camus and Rilke, and film directors Ingmar Bergman and Wim Wenders.

Employing a visual voice that is primarily on the fringe of the European Romantic tradition, HILDER brings together his classical eye and an existential soul, using traditional methods and materials such as oils, glazes and wood panels.

"The soul, like the external world, has a geography all its own. For me, these paintings represent the geography of an aggregate of souls -- my own and, perhaps, yours as well." — Nathan Hilder
