About the Artist JON NEUSE earned two degrees at the University of
Minnesota, receiving his M.F.A. in 1987 and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration in 1977. He also received a Master of Divinity degree from the
United Theological Seminary in 1972 and a B.F.A. from Elmhurst College in 1967.
NEUSE'S work is in the collections of Texaco, Unisys
Corporation, United Parcel Service, Dayton Hudson Corporation, Hamline University, North Dakota State University, and numerous others.
NEUSE maintains an active private teaching practice, having taken his students to Greece, Iceland and France. However, even after travels to many lands, the major thematic thread in his imagery is the landscape where he grew up, the Hill Country of Texas.
With extraordinary economy of line, contrasts of color and texture are reduced to a minimumthe balance and refinement largely determined by the dynamics of his material. NEUSE prefers the monotype medium because it allows him to use both his painting and printing skills to develop ideas. Each monotype is a distinctly individual work, and the process allows NEUSE a great deal of immediacy and spontaneity as images develop.
NEUSE'S process uses the viscosity of the paint, its speed and direction, and its interaction with other layers of oil pigment. The creation of each piece is not a "setting out" to render something he sees in his mind's eye. Midway through the process, shapes, colors, value, and texturesthe materials themselvestake on a life of their own. It is their direction and flow to which he responds.
NEUSE'S creative process moves at its own maddening pacenew values, proportions, color and harmonies originate in the working. However, NEUSE never loses sight of the technical and artistic strides he has made; he sets those aside to permit a more potent viewpoint of simplicity to be seen.
