About the Artist MICHAEL PAUL received his degree in Fine Arts
at Moorhead (Minnesota) State University, and studied Conservation and Restoration at
the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
His work is in the collections of the Mayo Clinic, North Dakota Museum of Art (Grand Forks), the Plains Art Museum (Fargo) and the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis, among many others.
"In a world of fluid populations and fragmented landscapes, few of us
have an abiding connection to one place. We need landscapes we can come
home to," the artist says.
MICHAEL PAUL'S work expresses our connection to place,
the Northern Plains, prairies and wetlands that remain uncut and unpaved,
although we have been gradually disconnecting ourselves from that land
for more than a century. Portraying this haunting beauty, he gives us a sense of association and reminds us of the need to conserve.
Years ago, the artist was able to roam a
corner of the Northern Plains, sheltered by a stand of old growth pine,
and enjoy an 80-mile vista of unbroken grassland. Today those hills
and the grove are paved over. In cutting those pine roots, some of our own
roots were cut as well.
MICHAEL PAUL'S paintings portray a landscape that quietly exerts a powerful influence on those who live here. It is a
land directly shaped by wind, hail, blizzards and scorching sun.
"It is the floor of the sky, tortured by
extremes."
