MAREN KLOPPMANN earned her MFA from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 1996 and her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1993. She has been the recipient of many awards, including the McKnight Fellowship for Ceramic Artists and the State Arts Board Initiative Grant for 2009.

MAREN KLOPPMANN began her ceramic career making functional ware in a production pottery studio in Germany. Though she continues to make plates, boxes and vessels, KLOPPMANN has followed her own inclinations down a path of asymmetry, irregularity and sculpture.

One of KLOPPMANN'S goals as an artist is to "balance a visual dialog between the qualities of man-made structures and organic shapes. Her current work revolves around wall installations that reference forms which are archetypal and architectural in quality. Kloppman’s processes are steeped in traditions of craft and design, however, her intent is to relate the work to the canon of 20th century Modernism and Conceptual Art. She makes conceptual space tangible through a confluence of imperative visual elements. While her pieces are of modular nature, each element is constructed by hand to imbue subtle organic imperfections that energize a visual language of austerity.
